Sitting on a desk it passes for an ordinary ballpoint, which is the entire trick. The body is built from individual magnetic cylinders and chrome steel balls that click together into pen shape and come apart the moment somebody needs something to do with their hands.
Pulled apart, the segments rebuild into a stick figure, a bicycle, a pyramid or whatever a long meeting inspires. The magnets hold a shape firmly enough that it stands up on its own, while still separating easily for the next configuration.
It arrives boxed with the pen body, the magnetic segments, the steel balls, spare ink refills and a touch screen stylus tip. That last piece means it moves between paper, tablet and phone without the recipient having to own a second device.
The spare refills matter more than they sound. A fidget toy that stops writing becomes a fidget toy with a guilty conscience, and including refills means it keeps functioning as a real pen for as long as it keeps functioning as a distraction.
It suits anyone who fidgets, doodles or simply cannot sit through a conference call with idle hands. Teenagers, office workers, engineers and restless dads all tend to pick it up and then fail to put it down.
Its great advantage over an obvious desk toy is deniability. It looks entirely professional in a meeting, right up until there is a small magnetic motorcycle parked next to the keyboard and somebody asks how long that has been going on.
